十二世纪中叶，日本爆发平治之乱。平、源两大家族相互角力，最终源家落败，源义朝（加藤雅也 饰）也被乱军杀害。在此之后，义朝爱妻常盘（稻森泉 饰）及两个孩子赖朝（池松壮亮 饰）和牛若丸先后被强大的平清盛（渡哲也 饰）俘虏，并暂时保得性命。数年过去，牛若丸与敌人的孩子共同成长起来。为防止将来对自己不利，清盛将常盘嫁与他人，并责令牛若丸出家。 投身鞍马寺的少年经过数年磨练，终于成长为武功高强的青年豪杰（泷泽秀明 饰）。某日，他从新宫十郎义盛（大杉涟 饰）得知自己的真正身世，从此背负起为家族报仇的使命。自此，浩劫辈出、浩浩荡荡的源平合战拉开了序幕……
