故事发生在清朝乾隆年间，四肢发达头脑简单的阿贵（孙兴 饰）骁勇彪悍，屡立战功，由此遭到和珅（王刚 饰）及其弟弟和琳（李雨泽 饰）的嫉恨，好在乾隆皇帝（张铁林 饰）知晓赞许阿贵的为人，命其迁往军机处行走。不爱读书的阿贵找到曾经被其抢了马而倒霉的书生唐大年（郭冬临 饰）当师爷，又阴差阳错娶了机灵古怪的红绸（曹颖 饰）当了老婆。可是在皇帝身边的日子并不好过，和珅兄弟巨贪成性，排挞异己；唐大年见风使舵，心里有自己一套小算盘；贝勒爷、皇太后根基雄厚，难以动摇。 混不吝并且始终搞不清状况的阿贵，就这样一次次地卷入权力斗争的漩涡之中……
