1986年，以莱曼为首的国际核电专家团赴秦昌核电站考察，对中国建造核电站的能力提出质疑，资料管理员叶家明大胆提出整改思路，解除危机，由此踏上梦寐以求的科研道路，并和采购员林天诚、焊接工程师孟志远结为挚友。1996年，中国自主核电事业受到西方制约，步履维艰。孟志远因病离世，林天诚出走海外，三个家庭自此天各一方。2009年，核研院开启研制自主百万千瓦级核电技术的新征程，迎来林奇、孟晓薇、叶启辰等年轻生力军。彼时，已成为国际知名核电技术销售公司合伙人的林天诚也回到国内，成为核研院最大的竞争对手。面对重重挑战，几代核工业人通力合作，向着中国自主第三代核电技术“华龙一号”这一目标，在磨砺中探索新路……
