1974年坝上腊月，知青帅子（夏雨 饰）被分配给新上任的革委会大队长牛鲜花（闫妮 饰）监管，喜爱文艺的牛鲜花欣赏帅子的才艺，对他处处加以保护，帅子的女友知青刘青（马苏 饰）因此怀恨在心。为了早日回城，帅子在一次事故中受重伤失去语言及思考能力，而其父母均被关在牛棚，牛鲜花毅然决 定与帅子结婚，照顾其终生，刘青含恨回城。“四人帮”粉碎后，帅子父母平反，牛鲜花与帅子带一双女儿回城。离开话剧团下海经商的帅子同情刘青的不幸婚姻，二人终于又走到一起。离异的牛鲜花一人挑起家庭的重担，从摆街摊到经营水产品公司，终于在事业上获得成功，却与刘青和帅子的公司数次正面交锋……
